The  Boxing Pro Jack Broughton 1743 Training Gloves are made in honor of the great 18th-century British boxer, also known as the father of the English Boxing Academy, who ιntoduced the first official boxing rules at a competitive level (Broughton’s Rules).

Before the invention of the rules of Boxing, boxing matches were completely out of control and easily ended up in the death of the defeated.  The rules in strikes differed from fight to fight, apparently due to the lack of a commonly accepted framework that regulates behaviors within the ring.

Jack Broughton invented the rules in 1743, 2 years after he unintentionally caused the death of George Stevenson, an opponent in the ring. 

Broughton’s Rules included rules that prohibited the boxer from hitting his opponent,  while he was down, and the presence of other third parties in the ring, beyond the athlete's and corner men. In addition, he introduced the 30-second rule, to prevent the boxer that has fallen to stand up, while he invented the “mufflers” that were the forerunners of today's boxing gloves.

The Jack Broughton rules were in force almost a century after their first implementation and replaced by “London Prize Ring Rules” in 1838!
